TEST IN THE WIND AT SAMAYA HIGH CAMP

The development of Samaya products includes numerous test phases carried out in-house at Samaya High Camp in Annecy. Adrien Guillon, Product Development & Marketing Manager, explains how wind resistance tests are carried out.

Wind resistance tests are carried out on our premises in Annecy. Having all the equipment available in-house enables us to carry out these tests at every stage of development and prototyping, and therefore to be very precise in product design.

Today I'm going to present two types of test: those that measure the resistance of tents when erected in strong winds, and those that check how easy they are to erect in the wind.

As far as wind resistance tests are concerned, we have defined test standards according to the type of tent, in order to test prototypes in conditions as close as possible to the reality of the field. For 4-season tents, this means reproducing winds in excess of 100 km/h, compared with 70 km/h for 3-season tents. We have our own snow cannon and paramotor, with which we carry out all our tests. The paramotor enables us to carry out intense tests at speeds of up to 120 km/h, with strong, sudden winds, to test the tent's resistance. With the snow cannon, we can generate winds of 70-90 km/h, for long-duration tests.

At the end of each season, and before our products are launched on the market, we complete these tests with a WindLab certification, in our partner DAC's standardized wind tunnel. Our products are placed at the heart of a laminar flow, in an approved enclosure. At this point, we push the tents to the breaking point. This is the final validation stage.

When it comes to checking ease of assembly, the question we ask ourselves at every test is whether we can easily assemble the product in the wind, and how we can optimize its assembly and construction to make it all the simpler. In concrete terms, we use a snow cannon to generate a constant-speed wind of around 70 km/h. Our athletes are happy to take part in these tests. Our athletes are happy to take part in these tests, which are a great way of getting to grips with a product! I'll let you discover the test carried out on the Samaya INSPIRE2 with our Samaya Family athlete Nouria Newman.
